How to fix a falling ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) without spending more
Falling ROAS is usually a tracking problem wearing a creative costume. Here is the order I check things in, and why that order matters.
The first question is not about creative
When ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) drops, most people open the ad manager and start swapping images. That is the third thing to check, not the first.
The first question is simple: does the platform know what a sale is? If your purchase event fires late, fires twice, or fires without a value, the algorithm optimises toward the wrong people. It will happily spend your budget on cheap clicks that never convert.
I start every account with a tracking audit for this reason. On the Aryia account the fix was server side event quality, and the blended ROAS reached 5.2x on the same offer.
Check these four things, in this order
- Purchase event accuracy. Compare the platform number to your bank for the same week. A gap above 10 percent is a tracking problem, not a market problem.
- Event match quality. If your server side setup is missing customer parameters, match quality falls and the algorithm guesses.
- Creative fatigue. Frequency above 2.5 on a cold audience usually means the same people are seeing the same image again.
- Offer strength. A weak offer cannot be rescued by good media buying. If your price moved or your shipping changed, say so.
Why the order matters
If you fix creative while tracking is broken, you cannot tell whether the new creative worked. You will keep the wrong winner and cut the wrong loser. Fixing tracking first gives you a clean read on everything after it.
This is also why I do not promise a number before an audit. Anyone quoting a ROAS target before seeing your event data is guessing.
What to do this week
Pull one week of purchases from your bank and one week from the platform. Put them side by side. If they match within 10 percent, your problem is creative or offer. If they do not, stop everything else and fix tracking first.
If you want a second pair of eyes on the numbers, book a free 1:1 consultation and I will show you what I would fix first.
The same fix, applied end to end
Whether fixing Meta ads, preparing content for AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), or running CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization), measurement discipline comes first.
See this exact sequence on a live account in the Aryia leather goods case study: a 5.2x ROAS on Meta ads after a tracking and creative rebuild, with the timeframe stated.
